Operations Support Engineer
Wolverine Pipe Line Company is a transportation service company, headquartered in Portage, Michigan and incorporated in 1952. We have over 85 employees in the three states we operate in – Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. Wolverine operates 700+ miles of active steel pipeline, connecting Chicago refineries to terminals in Michigan and Northwest Indiana and moving product west to east. We transport over 350,000 barrels or 14.7 million gallons of refined products a day. Wolverine also provides approximately 30% of Michigan’s daily refined products supply. We deliver the products that fuel the nation.
Wolverine does not own the product we ship. We are strictly a transport vehicle for our customers, much like UPS or FedEx is for packages. The Federal Government regulates the tariffs Wolverine charges to transport products between origins and destinations.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include managing projects and programs related to maintaining the integrity of pipelines and related facilities. Manage a diverse workload of routine and non-routine tasks to support the Company’s core values of safety, regulatory compliance, and reliability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Not all inclusive)
- Project Management
- Serve as subject matter expert for Project Management Protocols, provide training and
guidance for internal and contract Project Managers - Serve as Project Manager for a variety of projects throughout the year. Responsible for
managing a variety of projects from budgeting to execution to records management. - Provide technical, operational, and project management support to field activities, including
project scoping, cost estimating, evaluation of alternatives, and procurement. - Responsible for monitoring regulatory compliance during construction activities and ensure
project documentation includes regulatory required (enforced by PHMSA) records. - Responsible for reviewing project expense data and managing project expenditures and
commitments - Monitor and observe field construction projects to ensure specifications are in compliance
with approved designs.
- Serve as subject matter expert for Project Management Protocols, provide training and
- Program Management
- Oversees various Wolverine Integrity Management Systems (WIMS) and Facilities Inspection
& Maintenance Management System (FIMMS) programs to ensure continuous compliance
with all pertinent regulations and standards (DOT, API, etc.). - Manage various program inspection schedules, obtain appropriate contract support, and
track follow-up actions to closure.
- Oversees various Wolverine Integrity Management Systems (WIMS) and Facilities Inspection
- General Engineering Support
- Collaborate with external engineering team, contractors, and internal departments
(management, finance, safety, etc.) as needed. - Develop and implement solutions to technical issues related to operating assets utilizing
problem solving skills. - Serve as or obtain appropriate technical consultants for field team as needed, including
providing project related interpretation of codes, laws, and regulations.
- Collaborate with external engineering team, contractors, and internal departments
Education, prior work experience and specialized skills and knowledge:
- Bachelor of Science in Civil, Mechanical, Petroleum or Construction/Project Management Engineering
- Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
- Proven experience with the following skills: critical thinking, research, problem-solving, logical reasoning, attention to detail, decision making, communication (verbal and written), planning and organizing
- Ability to work independently as well as within small and large group environments
- Requires client and customer focus with frequent independent interaction internally and externally
- Experience with Behavioral Based Safety programs
- Experience in pipeline industry including basic knowledge related to compliance with PHMSA regulations
- AutoCAD experience is a plus
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record
Physical Environment/working conditions:
- Frequently work in a normal office and/or field environment
- Occasionally working outdoors in all weather conditions and terrains
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, and crouching
- Frequently reaching for and gripping objects
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 40 lbs.
- Frequent telephone use and reading
- Occasional travel, 10-25% of the time
- Frequent use of office equipment
